Cockatoo portraits

The cockatoo family is a fascinating species with lots of variations in its members. Each member has a different temper and personality.

For example, the Moluccans are famous for their joyful and upbeat personality. Yellow-crested are extremely playful and naughty.

My goal is to portray each of their unique personalities instead of a mere depiction of their appearance

To know more about the varying personalities of Cockatoos, read this blog post.

2020 ~ Cockatoo Portrait Series Basseri Girl

“The Basseri girl”
40cm x 50cm
Watercolor on paper. Painted in 2020

The Basseri Girl

I was traveling in Iran in 2018 when I came by this traditional guest house in Pasargadae, owned by a family of descendants of the Basseri nomad tribe. The Basseri people are a nomadic tribe in the Fars Province around Shiraz.

I spent an afternoon in their garden. Warm sunshine came through the courtyard where time seemed to be frozen. To this day, I still have very fond memories of the warm people, the delicious food, and the time spent in the garden.

2020 ~ Cockatoo Portrait Series Arequipas Merchant

“Arequipa Merchant”
40cm x 50cm
Watercolor on paper. Painted in 2020

Arequipa Merchant

“Arequipa’s merchant” is inspired by a lady selling Aymara-inspired dolls on the street of Arequipa when I traveled there in 2018. The sun was setting at the time, but I remember she has a cheerful and uplifting spirit.

Human portraits

I always find the people to be the highlight of any traveling. This series is initially developed in an attempt to heighten my technical skill and color treatment. I put emphasis on the memories I associated with these people I met.
